Thinking of trying out for The Voice 2012? Then read this advice from Michelle McNulty, the supervising casting director for the new season of NBC’s The Voice.

1. Know what kind of artist you want to be. “Especially for this show, there aren’t theme weeks so much. It’s about knowing the kind of artist you want to be,” McNulty says. “If you want to be a country artist, you come in and sing country songs. If you want to be a pop artist, sing those pop songs.”

2. Know your capabilities as an artist. “Song choice is very, very important,” she points out. “Just because you like the song doesn’t necessarily mean you should sing that song. It might be out of your range. So, it’s important to know your range as an artist and to sing songs that are good for your voice.”
